The Wet and Rainy Rolex
24 Hours of Daytona
by Rob Elting Feb
1, 2004
The
42nd anniversary of the Rolex 24 At Daytona, proved to be a long, wet day and
night for all, as the race unfolded. The NASCAR stars, Tony Stewart and Dale
Earnhardt Jr. along with Andy Wallace, showed they had what it took to win the
race.
With 17 minutes remaining, their race came to an end as the No. 2 Howard-Boss Motorsports Chevrolet Crawford, which had built a three-lap advantage during the previous 23 hours, fell victim to a suspension problem ending all hope for victory. This opened up the victory door for the No. 54 Bell Motorsports Pontiac Doran and drivers Terry Borcheller, Forest Barber, Andy Pilgrim and Christian Fittipaldi to capture the overall Rolex 24 victory.
Tony
Stewart, who was teamed with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Andy Wallace, was nursing
the No. 2 car during the 24th hour with the suspension problem and had to
settle for third in the Daytona Prototype class and fourth overall in the
race.
The No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley with drivers Max Angelelli, Wayne Taylor and Emmanuel Collard also had mechanical problems, that halted them too in the 24th hour.
The start of the race was under dry conditions in the Rolex 24, but as the first hour past the rain started, and never seamed to stop. The cool temperatures, wind and rain tested every drivers abilities. During the early morning hours, the race was run under caution for about 2 ½ hours and at 7:38 a.m., for the first time since the 1989 race, the Rolex 24 was red flagged for standing water.
At 10:30 a.m., the race resumed setting up a two hour, 42-minute sprint to the finish with the No. 2 car holding off any challengers.
The GT class had a battle of
their own, that proved to ba just as exciting to watch as the team of Mike
Fitzgerald, Joe and Jay Policastro, Robin Liddell and Johnny Mowlem in the No.
44 Orbit Racing Porsche GT3 RS captured the GT class win(second overall) by a
margin of only 10 seconds over the Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche GT3 Cup
and drivers
Johannes
van Overbeek, Seth Neiman, Lonnie Pechnik, Peter Cunningham and Mike
Rockenfeller. The No. 74 car had to settled for third overall.
In Super Grand Sport, the Doncaster Racing No. 91 Porsche GT3 Cup driven by, Jean-Francois Dumoulin, Robert Julien, Greg Pootmans and Marc Lieb captured the Super Grand Sport title, and finished 11th-place overall.
